Almost every flower, vape, pre-roll and edible on the Red Oak menu carries one of three words: indica, sativa or hybrid. On October 18, 2026 our flower shelf split almost evenly, with 21 sativa or sativa-dominant options, 19 hybrids and 16 indicas. It’s one of the most common questions at the counter, so here is what they actually tell you, what they don’t, and how to use them without overthinking it.

The short answer
The labels describe a plant’s family tree. Traditionally, “indica” was used for shorter, bushier plants and “sativa” for taller, thinner ones, and “hybrid” means a cross of the two. Today almost everything sold in New Jersey is a hybrid somewhere back in its genetics, so the label is a loose hint, not a guarantee of how a strain will feel.
What people usually mean by each
| Label | What shoppers often expect | Examples on our menu now |
|---|---|---|
| Sativa | Daytime, social, upbeat | Super Silver Haze (Red Oak Cannabis), Jack Herer (Grown Rogue), Lime Trails (Ozone), L’Orange (Rythm) |
| Hybrid | Somewhere in the middle | Rose Gold Runtz (Good Green), Rainbow Chip (Ozone), Afternoon Delight #4 (Rythm), Project Georgia Pie (Red Oak Cannabis) |
| Indica | Evening, relaxed, wind-down | Dual OG (Ozone), Punch Breath (Yeti), Biscotti Pippen (Red Oak Cannabis), Fig Bar (Clade 9) |
Those expectations are common shorthand, not a rule. Two indicas can feel nothing alike, and plenty of people find a “sativa” relaxing. Your dose, your tolerance, what you ate and the setting you’re in all change the experience.
What matters more than the label
- How much you take. A small amount of a strong strain can be gentler than a lot of a mild one. Honest dosing beats any label.
- Terpenes, a.k.a. the smell. The aroma compounds that make one jar smell like citrus and another like pine or diesel. If you liked a strain before, its smell is a better clue to the next one than the word on the label. Ask a budtender what a strain smells like.
- THC percentage, in context. Flower on our menu tests from about 21% to about 41% THC. Higher isn’t automatically better; if you’re new, start toward the low end.
- Format. A gummy and a joint of the same strain feel very different in timing. Edibles take 30 minutes to two hours to kick in; see fast-acting vs classic gummies.
How to use the labels at Red Oak
- Start with what you liked before. Tell the budtender the strain or the smell, and they can point you to something close.
- Use the label as a tiebreaker. Daytime plans? Lean sativa or hybrid. Staying in for the night? Lean indica. Then pick by smell.
- Try small. A 1 g jar or a single pre-roll is a cheap way to test a strain before buying an eighth. Our flower page lists the sizes on the menu, and the pre-rolls page covers singles.
- Write it down. Strain, brand, how much, how it felt. Next time you’ll know.
One brand, all three labels
If you want to compare for yourself, one brand with all three labels makes it easy. Rythm has sativas (L’Orange, Cherry Maui Wowie), hybrids (Afternoon Delight #4, Bananaconda) and an indica (Brownie Scout) on our menu right now, and our own Red Oak Cannabis smalls cover all three as well.
Quick answers
What is the difference between indica, sativa and hybrid?
Genetics. Indica and sativa are the two traditional plant types and hybrid is a cross, but most of what’s sold today is mixed somewhere in its family tree. Use the label as a hint and pick by smell and dose.
Is indica or sativa better for a first-timer?
Neither label matters as much as the amount. Start small with a lower-THC option, wait, and see how you feel before taking more.
Does Red Oak label strains on the menu?
Yes. Flower, vapes, pre-rolls and edibles on the Red Oak menu show indica, sativa or hybrid, and flower, vapes and pre-rolls show the lab-tested THC percentage for that batch.
